About J. Packham's #MLS and #NASL Rankings

J. Packham's MLS and NASL Rankings is an objective performance-based system. It is based off a modified ELO formula that factors in goal differential and has transfer of points for ties.

Including point differential is a dynamic way to calculate an ELO point ranking that brings more opportunity for rankings to reflect most recent play while punishing poor and rewarding good performances.

J. Packham's MLS and NASL Rankings allows for rapid point exchange to give a more accurate weekly power ranking for clubs.

Both MLS and the NASL participate in the US OPEN CUP and AMWAY CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP, so there are opportunities for transactions between leagues. Though there are opportunities for point exchange between the leagues, the team rankings are still separated by league since the opportunity for inter-league play is limited and, therefore, a team in the NASL wouldn't actually rank against an MLS team properly. Also, there is potential disparity between the importance given to the inter-league play and, therefore, one team could be playing their starters while their opponents play their regular bench players to keep starters fresh for league play. For these reasons, the league power rankings will remain separate and there will be no exchange of points between leagues, and the power rankings will be based off of league play alone.

Have fun tracking your favourite team as they move up and down J. Packham's MLS and NASL Rankings week by week.
